Quetiapine, Seroquel, and Seroquel XR are some of the medications we’ve come to expect. But are they the only ones?
A new study in the Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology has been investigating the potential effects of quetiapine, a drug with the active ingredient quetiapine, on patients who take aripiprazole. These patients will receive two doses of quetiapine, three doses of quetiapine, and two doses of quetiapine plus one additional dose of quetiapine. For each dose, they will receive a placebo for a period of 2 weeks and then an additional 2 weeks of quetiapine.
The researchers did not see any significant changes in the overall outcomes (compared with placebo) or in the remission rate of the patients who received quetiapine plus quetiapine for 2 weeks. Patients who received quetiapine, but not quetiapine plus quetiapine, had a lower remission rate, but the remission rate of the quetiapine group was higher.
In their study, the researchers did not see a significant difference in the rates of adverse effects between the quetiapine group and the placebo group.
Quetiapine is used for treating depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder, and quetiapine XR is used for treating bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Seroquel, the brand name for quetiapine, was originally developed to treat patients with manic episodes associated with bipolar I disorder. It is also used for the treatment of bipolar mania in bipolar disorder. Seroquel XR is a newer medication to treat schizophrenia. Aripiprazole was also approved by the FDA in 1997 to treat patients with bipolar I disorder and bipolar disorder as well as the symptoms of mania and anorexia nervosa. In clinical practice, quetiapine is taken once a day with or without food.
Because these medications are used for both the treatment and prevention of relapse in patients with bipolar disorder, quetiapine is often prescribed off-label as an adjunct to other treatments for other conditions.

Drugs for Schizophrenia (Seroquel)
Seroquel is an antipsychotic medication that is sometimes used to treat schizophrenia. However, like all medicines, it can cause side effects such as drowsiness, weight gain, and dizziness.
